The Opioid Alternative
A few years ago, a loved one was battling an opioid addiction and I watched their life spin out of control. I stayed connected and supportive, trusting that I could formulate an herbal product to help them and others with similar struggles. I studied combinations of herbs which proved successful in helping relieve both physical and mental aspects of anxiety. Through my research I began to focus on the neural pathways that are formed in response to panic and stress. Once established, these nervous system pathways constitute a ‘learned response” which responds similarly to all types of stressful situations. In other words, when we encounter a stressful situation, such as commuting, or personal confrontations, our nervous system gets conditioned to respond pretty much the same way regardless of the origins of the stress.
The yearning to understand and unwind this became my obsession. I studied pathways of anxiety and ways to soothe those pathways. While the pathways are complex, there are specific things we can do to help reduce panic and anxiety: take a breath, stay focused and be mindful. But how does one do that in the heat of an argument or when they know they’re facing a horrible commute, or have to get on a plane and can’t handle the turbulence? Qi of Calm™ became our answer.
We found the opportunity for relief is greatly enhanced by applying lotion to several key locations on the body. This knowledge helped us to develop a lotion that was helpful for reducing anxiety, and provide us an opportunity to “reset” those learned neural pathways. Qi of Calm™ is a lotion you’ll want to apply over your spleen (just below your bottom rib on the left side of your abdomen). Not only does it relieve the symptoms for high panic, but also for post traumatic stress disorder, situational anxiety, separation anxiety, selective mutism and general anxiety disorder. Why do I have to put this lotion over my spleen to work? Our spleen is where a large concentration of CB2 receptors reside and when the active ingredients in Qi of Calm™ begin activating those receptors, a beautiful thing begins to happen: we feel relief.
Qi of Calm™, is a little bit of a play on words. Qi, pronounced ‘chee’ is the Chinese word to describe our life force, or energy. In many ways, Qi is the ocean, or sea that makes up our bodies. In our hectic, rush-rush, stressed-out lives, that sea can rage pretty convincingly inside us. Add our cultural addiction to caffeine, and most of us are wound up pretty tight. Qi of Calm™ was designed to bring some tranquility and peacefulness back into our lives. Working on both physical and mental aspects of our anxiety, Qi of Calm™ acts within five minutes to bring us back down to manageable levels of stress.
How do I use it?
Let’s say, for example, on a scale of one to ten, I find myself at a six or higher. I grab my bottle of Qi of Calm™, apply about a dime-sized pump to the left side of my abdomen, just below my bottom left rib. This is an important place to apply the Lotion to as we have a number of CB2 receptors located in our spleen. Once activated with the ingredients in Qi of Calm™, our body begins to calm down.
Another great place to apply Qi of Calm™ is below our chin on our neck, over the lymph nodes. If you’re suffering from bouts of insomnia, as I have often experienced in my life, rub Qi of Calm™ over the abdomen, under that bottom left rib, and rub on the bottoms of your feet. Lots of acupuncture points on the bottoms of our feet will become sensitized, and the result is a beautiful night of restful sleep.
What’s in it?
Qi of Calm™ is a carefully crafted, eclectic assortment of herbs from all over the world blended to harmoniously soothe anxiety, stress and aid with insomnia. Western herbs, such as chamomile, lavender, skullcap, green tea and passionflower are joined by Ayurvedic herbs such as ashwaganda, which is considered a tonic for protection against stress and Brahmi, which is believed to support sattva, or the pure essence of consciousness. Brahmi helps to promote a balanced emotional state and aid with a restful sleep.
Why Green Tea?
From time to time, we are asked why we put green tea in our Qi of Calm™ lotion. Green tea contains an amino acid, L-theanine, which has been historically shown to promote relaxation. L-theanine also has a chemical similarity to glutamate, which helps to calm nerve networks in the brain.
Qi of Calm’s Essential Oil Blend
Our challenge in developing the essential oil blend for Qi of Calm™ was one of conveying a sense of relaxation with the essential oils we chose. Of course our bold bottom note of Frankincense and Sandalwood affords a multitude of options for mid-range and top-notes. We chose Bulgarian Lavender (which is where a surprising amount of Provence Lavender actually comes from!) added Chamomile, Bergamot and clove extract to create a signature that gently coaxes you into relaxation as you apply the Lotion!
When can I use it?
Qi of Calm™ is popular with travelers suffering from flight anxiety, PTSD sufferers, situational anxiety and General Anxiety Disorder relief. This lotion is safe for children.
One person’s experience with Qi of Calm™
I had one customer, Mary, from just outside of Seattle, who told me that she had all these constant thoughts racing around in her head when she laid down to sleep and nothing had worked. She discovered our Qi of Calm™ Lotion and was very skeptical. That night, she took it home and reached for it when all the thoughts began racing around her brain when she tried to fall asleep. In her words, “I put the Qi of Calm™ on the bottoms of my feet, just like you instructed and for about five minutes the thoughts kept racing through my head and I thought this stuff doesn’t work. Then, after about five minutes, the thoughts started fading, like someone turned down the volume on the stereo. I blinked and turned my head to hear the thoughts and they weren’t there! I felt drowsy and fell off to sleep!! I don’t remember having a night like this in over 30 years! Thank you!! I will be a customer for life!!”
Qi of Calm™ and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Phil was a veteran of the second Iraq war and suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He approached me before a presentation I was giving and asked to try some of the Qi of Calm™ Lotion. I instructed him to put it over his spleen and he took his seat. My presentation began about 15 minutes later, and as I approached the podium, the screen fell over making a large crashing sound, startling many of the people in the room. I was able to give my presentation and afterwards Phil came up to me and said that he had his back to me when the screen came down. In the past, an unexpected sound would cause him to lose his grip, and put him into panic for extended periods of time; however, the crashing sound had no effect on him and he kept shaking his head during the presentation, in disbelief. He now is able to drive a car, which he had not been able to do for years.
Qi of Calm™ is available in two sizes: 8 ounce $55, and 2 ounce $20. Our two ounce bottle is safe to accompany you as a carry on if you travel by plane.
