A few years ago, a loved one was battling an opioid addiction and I watched their life spin out of control. I stayed connected and supportive, trusting that I could formulate an herbal product to help them and others with similar struggles. I studied combinations of herbs which proved successful in helping relieve both physical and mental aspects of anxiety. Through my research I began to focus on the neural pathways that are formed in response to panic and stress. Once established, these nervous system pathways constitute a ‘learned response” which responds similarly to all types of stressful situations. In other words, when we encounter a stressful situation, such as commuting, or personal confrontations, our nervous system gets conditioned to respond pretty much the same way regardless of the origins of the stress.
The yearning to understand and unwind this became my obsession. I studied pathways of anxiety and ways to soothe those pathways. While the pathways are complex, there are specific things we can do to help reduce panic and anxiety: take a breath, stay focused and be mindful. But how does one do that in the heat of an argument or when they know they’re facing a horrible commute, or have to get on a plane and can’t handle the turbulence? Calm Day became our answer.
We found the opportunity for relief is greatly enhanced by applying lotion to several key locations on the body. This knowledge helped us to develop a lotion that was helpful for reducing anxiety, and provide us an opportunity to “reset” those learned neural pathways. Calm Day is a lotion you’ll want to apply over your spleen (just below your bottom rib on the left side of your abdomen). Not only does it relieve the symptoms for high panic, but also for post traumatic stress disorder, situational anxiety, separation anxiety, selective mutism and general anxiety disorder. Why do I have to put this lotion over my spleen to work? Our spleen is where a large concentration of CB2 receptors reside and when the active ingredients in Calm Day begin activating those receptors, a beautiful thing begins to happen: we feel relief.
How do I use it?
Let’s say, for example, on a scale of one to ten, I find myself at a six or higher. I grab my bottle of Calm Day, apply about a dime-sized pump to the left side of my abdomen, just below my bottom left rib. This is an important place to apply the Lotion to as we have a number of CB2 receptors located in our spleen. Once activated with the ingredients in Calm Day, our body begins to calm down.
Another great place to apply Calm Day is below our chin on our neck, over the lymph nodes. If you’re suffering from bouts of insomnia, as I have often experienced in my life, rub Calm Day over the abdomen, under that bottom left rib, and rub on the bottoms of your feet. Lots of acupuncture points on the bottoms of our feet will become sensitized, and the result is a beautiful night of restful sleep.
Lastly, applying from the crease of the wrist up about 2.5 is another great area. There are two acupuncture points, Pericardium 6 and Heart 7, that get activated and promote restfulness.
What’s in it?
Calm Day is a carefully crafted, eclectic assortment of herbs from all over the world blended to harmoniously soothe anxiety, stress and aid with insomnia. Western herbs, such as chamomile, lavender, skullcap, green tea and passionflower are joined by Ayurvedic herbs such as ashwaganda, which is considered a tonic for protection against stress and Brahmi, which is believed to support sattva, or the pure essence of consciousness. Brahmi helps to promote a balanced emotional state and aid with a restful sleep.
Why Green Tea?
From time to time, we are asked why we put green tea in our Calm Day lotion. Green tea contains an amino acid, L-theanine, which has been historically shown to promote relaxation. L-theanine also has a chemical similarity to glutamate, which helps to calm nerve networks in the brain.
Calm Day's Essential Oil Blend
Our challenge in developing the essential oil blend for Calm Day was one of conveying a sense of relaxation with the essential oils we chose. Of course our bold bottom note of Frankincense and Sandalwood affords a multitude of options for mid-range and top-notes. We chose Bulgarian Lavender (which is where a surprising amount of Provence Lavender actually comes from!) added Chamomile, Bergamot and clove extract to create a signature that gently coaxes you into relaxation as you apply the Lotion!
One person’s experience with Calm Day
I had one customer, Mary, from just outside of Seattle, who told me that she had all these constant thoughts racing around in her head when she laid down to sleep and nothing had worked. She discovered our Calm Day Lotion and was very skeptical. That night, she took it home and reached for it when all the thoughts began racing around her brain when she tried to fall asleep. In her words, “I put the Calm Day on the bottoms of my feet, just like you instructed and for about five minutes the thoughts kept racing through my head and I thought this stuff doesn’t work. Then, after about five minutes, the thoughts started fading, like someone turned down the volume on the stereo. I blinked and turned my head to hear the thoughts and they weren’t there! I felt drowsy and fell off to sleep!! I don’t remember having a night like this in over 30 years! Thank you!! I will be a customer for life!!”
